The State Fire Marshal says, without metal shingles a fire earlier this year would have completely destroyed a building at the state’s largest apartment complex. Investigators say a cigarette started the fire at Sun Prairie Apartments on January 28th. Since then, crews have worked hard to fix the 36 units in the building. They’ve also made changes to make sure a similar fire doesn’t happen. Earlier this year, Sun Prairie went smoke free. Property managers say they’ve received good feedback about the change. Says, “That building, according to the Fire Marshal, would have been a total loss if we had not put the metal shingles over the asphalt. The fire would have run down the roof and been a total loss. These shingles saved the building.” These shingles are also the future of building energy efficient homes, and you can see them in the new showroom at Sun Prairie. It’s part of a grant from the Iowa Office of Energy Independence. The showroom is open to the public to promote the concept of metal shingles and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
Sun prairie says using a metal roof on just one building saves 15 barrels of oil and keeps 14 tons of asphalt out of landfills.

As Mr. and Mrs. Hunter were searching for roofing contractors via internet they found Kelly Roofing.
